Tabor House has a desperate need for more volunteers to support guests as they strive to turn their lives around. To recruit these volunteers, the charitable project is holding an open evening on Wednesday 19 September from 6pm to 9pm at St Anne’s Catholic Church in Digbeth, near Birmingham city centre.
Hospitality volunteers and shift leaders are needed to work evenings, overnights and mornings at the shelter. It also needs volunteer mentors to work one-to-one with guests using a revolutionary strengths-based approach. Full training is given.
Christy Acton, Deputy Community Projects Manager at Father Hudson’s Care, said, “Tabor House is helping individuals make real transitions from the street to their own independent accommodation. Since it opened at least 20 people have moved into employment whilst at Tabor House, and eight have moved on to positive outcomes in terms of accommodation. If anyone is interested in getting involved in this great project, please come along to the open evening on 19 September or get in contact.”
Tabor House has been open since September 2017, offering short term accommodation and support to men and women living on the street in Birmingham. It offers a safe place to sleep, food and hospitality, as well as helping its guests to make a fresh start and access services that help them move off the street. Over time it is expanding the number of beds available so it can reach out to more people experiencing homelessness.
Tabor House is a collaborative project between Father Hudson’s Care, Midland Heart, Housing Justice, Irish in Birmingham, the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham, corporate philanthropists, and local homelessness specialists. Together they have formed iShelter—a new homelessness organisation that aims to help homeless people turn their lives around. Homeless people are referred to Tabor House by the Birmingham charities Midland Heart and Sifa Fireside.
