Delivering PR for the UK’s largest regional tech festival
Yiannis Maos is the founder of Birmingham Tech Week, the flagship event by TechWM, a five-day event that places a spotlight on the Midlands’ tech scene. Heading into its fifth year, the event had been named as the UK’s largest regional tech festival and conference, with 7,500 people expected to attend.
In line with its growth, Yiannis and the TechWM team needed an agency that could deliver substantial results to push the coverage of the event; from announcement all the way through to post-event comms. Our PR objectives were to:
- Demonstrate the strength of the region’s tech ecosystem
- Foster collaboration by bringing together innovators and investors
- Showcase exciting start-ups and amplify their success stories
- Provide a platform to promote partners, sponsors, and speakers
Already an established event, we were tasked with putting the West Midlands front and centre in the minds of business leaders, journalists, and investors. It was vital that we engaged target media and raised national awareness from the get-go, so we ensured a steady stream of press releases, interviews, and partner announcements to gain momentum in the run-up to the festival. We also identified big-ticket stories ahead of and during the festival, working with partners and sponsors to leverage their newsworthiness.
Our team led on all PR for the festival, working closely with third parties to foster collaboration and ensure that no media opportunities were missed. We delivered a virtual press conference the week before the festival, in addition to hosting on-the-ground press offices each day during Birmingham Tech Week. For this, we leveraged our contacts at local college, BMet, and managed an army of 60+ students to join us on the ground to capture content throughout the week.
We achieved 70 pieces of coverage, with 65.7 million impressions – a tenfold increase on 2022.
Coverage highlights included Forbes, City AM, Insider, UK Tech News, and Business Live.
“EAST VILLAGE. did an astounding job for us during Birmingham Tech Week 2023, giving us 10x the media coverage achieved in 2022. This is hugely powerful for us as we find our regional voice and continue the West Midlands’ journey to becoming a global tech superpower.”
Martin Ward, West Midlands Tech Commissioner
